A bit about the process...
Reading through the information below will give you many
answers to how I go about pricing and producing your art.
|
 |
|
|
Each mural job is different. There are different wall surfaces,
like heavy stucco, orange peel, brick, block, wood - even plastic! There are different environments; will your mural be indoors
or out doors, exposed to the sun or exposed to constant damp? Where is it to be done? Is it up high? Is it easily accessible?
Or is it so large it would be better to have a crew? Are you in a hurry? Because of these and other factors, each job is quoted
individually.
Many mural artists quote a flat square foot rate, some as
high as $50.00 to $100.00 or more! Others have published pricing for square footage and complexity, but when you read through
all the fine print, you realize that because of many factors relative to your specific situation - like the ones mentioned
above - their "published price" isn't REALLY the price at all. If you find this hard to believe, click on the link below for
the International Mural Pricing Guide. Sometimes square foot pricing works well for the client, depending on the degree of
difficulty, but more often than not, it works out better for the artist! I want it to work for BOTH of us!

|
|
In quoting murals, we
both want a win-win.
You get the job you want at a fair price, and I have a job
(and Clients) I enjoy - and a job that is fairly compensated. This is why before I quote a job, I will arrange to meet
with you personally, listen to your ideas, physically see the space, discuss your budget and develop a plan that works
for us both - and develop a quote using real information. I always quote on a per-job basis, after meeting with
you and seeing the location...not by square footage, or over the phone.
Your are an individual. Your art is special. To me it
is not something that can be determined in a phone call or off a chart like a tax table.
There may be times I may not be the correct artist for the
job. Whether it be pricing, subject matter or medium (like airbrush or marine painting,) even if I am not able to personally
execute your job, I will help you find another artist or mural company that can help you achieve your goals.
I believe people should have art in
their lives.
If I can help you, I shall. If I can't, I'll tell you. There
are many fine artists in the area and many of us work together to bring art into the lives of our Clients. I value the opportunity
to work with you. If I can't do it this time, perhaps I can in the future! My work and Client base speaks for itself.
The same is true if you are in a hurry and I am booked - I'll provide you with a referral - although on occasion scheduling
change premiums will be considered for some jobs.
I really enjoy what I do and there is no point in forcing
something if it can't be of benefit to both of us, and more importantly, is not fun for either of us!
Flexibility is the key.

ABOUT FEES:
All LOCAL initial consulting work is FREE. If you are out
of state or over 40 miles from my home, we can initially work by email and work out other arrangements over the phone.
If you have an idea in mind, I will come see you and we will go from there. Based on this meeting, I will give you a
time estimate for execution of your work and determine initial costs. I will schedule your job in a way that is convenient
to your needs. Keep in mind that if I am working outside, the weather may be the arbiter! Also, I work on a 'first come, first
serve' basis. I will schedule you, but no work is started without a deposit.
Once we agree we want to work together and determine
the pricing estimate, the next step is to develop basic color renderings for your art - if they are needed. For this I charge
a small minimum fee, usually $125.00 each, payable in advance. Depending on the size and scope of the job, this fee can be
higher. Renderings are done to give the overall look and feel of the mural. Detail work is shown by supplements. Many times
I will throw in an additional idea just for fun at no charge! Not all jobs require a rendering. Conversely, there are more
complex jobs I will not do without them. This prevents any miscommunication when the job begins and aids in determining costs
of production.
After I present the renderings, I will provide one re-work
(if necessary) at no additional charge. Usually we can just discuss any minimal alterations without a need to do a second
drawing. If you then hire me to produce your art, I will deduct 50% of the cost of the renderings (up to two) from
the final job cost. Win-win. This discount is applied to the final payment. If for some reason you need to cancel the job,
I retain the renderings, and the fee. If we start the same job at a later date, the discount will apply.
If a rendering is not required (say you want something like a simple mural of your dog)
we'll just start. However, even if a rendering is not required but there is research involved (like finding a dozen pictures
of a dozen DIFFERENT dogs) I will estimate the time involved, give you a price and begin work when a deposit has been
paid to start the research.

In most cases, before I leave you will have an accurate quote
of what the final mural, tromp l'oeil, paint job, faux work or color consultation will cost.
This cost may change slightly depending on any major changes in renderings or if you expand
the scope of the job prior to the start. If this is the case, we shall revisit the changes and go from there. On larger jobs,
I may need some additional time to accurately determine costs outside of the work itself (scaffold rental, crew costs, etc...)
You will never have to 'guesstimate' or be surprised by hidden costs.
In addition, I will estimate supply costs (I am really good at this!) which will be billed at the end of the job, at
cost. If for some reason, supply costs appear that they will exceed the estimate, I will discuss this with you prior to my
purchasing them. More often than not, I am under the estimate, and if supplies (paint, finishes, scaffolding rental, etc.)
only slightly exceed my estimate, I will usually absorb this expense. If your walls need repair, patching, sanding or anything
else, you can prep them yourself or I will bill you $40.00 per hour for the privilege!
At the time I start your work, I require a 50% Down Payment of the quoted price
for the job, excluding the supplies estimate if under $200.

Any substantial changes to the project after we
start will be billed at a rate in accordance with the changes at the time they are requested. This can be as much as $50.00
per hour, because it's harder to make changes once painting your mural has begun. This is also why I will work diligently
at the beginning to make the renderings as accurate in layout and feel to the finished product as possible. I don't ever mind
making minor adjustments to a design or adding a small embellishment here and there at no charge, but don't get carried away!
The balance for the work will be paid upon completion*
(less the rendering credit, if applicapable), plus that of any major change fees and the supplies invoice.
*This excludes the topcoat. Latex paints can take up to 21
days to cure properly - that is, dry to completion. Paint must be thoroughly dry before a topcoat (if being used) is applied
to prevent moisture being trapped behind the paint, potentially causing damage to the art over time. Most acrylic paints
do not require this long a period, but as I said, each job is different. When your mural is completed, we will schedule a
time for my return to add the topcoat protectant.
ABOUT YOUR SATISFACTION:
THIS IS IMPORTANT,
if at any time during the process of my painting your art you are unsure, unhappy, or concerned, TELL ME. I am not
a prima donna and I can't read your mind. You are the one who will be living with your mural for a long time, and I want you
to be completely satisfied. Sometimes things get lost in translation and execution, so it's better to talk about it while
it is happening, rather than wait until the end, or worse yet, never say anything at all! I rely on my satisfied customers
for referrals, and you won't refer me if you are not happy! More importantly, I don't want you to live with a mural you don't
like. Win-win again!
I like what I do and I want you to understand the process.
It makes for a better business relationship. If we work together on more than one project, these guidelines can tend to relax!
If you have other questions about how your mural will be created, please call. I look forward
to working with you to see your ideas come to life!

Art is subjective. A look. A style. A feeling. Good art is also affordable. Get what you pay for.
It is impossible to determine a fee without
seeing the space and talking to you about your needs and ideas. Custom Art is a treasure for you to savor for years and I
will do everything possible to make art an affordable part of your life!
If you like my work, I am open
to discussing payment options.
I would rather work with you to
develop solutions than to simply stick to a fee schedule.
If you are under a tight
budget, call me and I will be happy to discuss your needs and see what I can do, or refer you to other professional mural
artists. I like a challenge, so if you have some interesting ideas, let's talk!
Remember, flexibility
is the key to a good working relationship.
For jobs out-of-state (Southeastern U.S)
I have a $2500.00 minimum, plus travel, expenses and supplies - but don't worry, flexibility is the key! Farther distances
will be negotiated individually.
Also, take a look at the link below. This
will give you an idea of what costs can be, levels of quality and more. Afterwards, I feel certain you will allow me the opportunity
to quote your job.

COMPARATIVE PRICING EXAMPLE
The square footage of the Park Auto West job (Business Murals Link) was approximately
1600 Sq. Ft. of HIGHLY DETAILED work, in addition to about 150' of red trim, plus extensive research to reflect
accurate representations of the gas pumps and the Mustang. The total charge for this job at that time (a regular
repeat client,) was under $7500.00, including paint and supplies.
A local Tampa Bay mural artist's square foot pricing chart would have this mural
costing over $49,500.00! A mural painter in Naples, Florida would have charged $72,000.00 based on published pricing!

When Making Murals - Make
it Different - Make it FUN!
|

Attention to detail is important, particularly in murals that are visible close-up. A good wall surface will improve
the quality of the detail tremendously.
|

Working closely with clients is always important. Sharing ideas and maintaining good communication will alleviate the
possibility of misunderstanding throughout the job.
|

Some murals require sketching out, others are simply created freehand. Each job is individual in nature. You can be assured
that all care is taken to achieve the effect you desire.
|

Working with Community Groups is a very uplifting experience. It is important to contribute to Community efforts and
I look forward to doing more.
|

Clients generally receive a full color layout of their job prior to work beginning. Working in this manner allows for
changes to be made on paper, saving time, supplies and money.
